Spent the morning with the family at Tawhiti Museum outside of Hawera.
Tawhiti is amazing. The level of detail of the dioramas and exhibits is enthralling.
Diaorama of a traditional Pa.
Diorama of a tauā on the beach.
Another tauā going through the bush.
Tawhiti is great at telling stories. Everything is visually enchanting and has backup information. You could easily spend a day in there reading all the history.
This was my favourite diorama. It depicts the jungle warfare in the late 1800s in South Taranaki.
Cool old map.
Tawhiti does all its own modeling and miniaturising. Very cool.
Shot looking into the model maker’s workshop.
Second favourite diorama showcasing Taranaki’s whaling trade.
Elaborately carved musket from the Maori wars of the early 1800s.
