New Zealand has 979 registered War Memorials. That’s one for every 4500 New Zealanders.

I’ve always had a fascination with war memorials. No real idea why. They’re so powerful: morbidly beautiful reminders of how tenuous happiness, peace, and democracy are.

I recently put together a bucket list. One of the goals is to “photograph every war memorial in New Zealand.” When I wrote the list I did not know there were 979. Now that I do know there are 979 memorials I am looking forward to this challenge even more.

The above photograph is the Rotorua RSA Memorial. It’s the first photo I took with this project — which I now hope to turn into a book — in mind.
